The four leaders will answer questions from the audience on live TV

The candidates for chancellor in Germany, Olaf Scholz (Spd), Friedrich Merz (Cdu/Csu), Robert Habeck (Greens) and Alice Weidel (AfD), will take part in the TV debate ‘Klartext’ on ZDF this evening, answering questions directly from the audience.

Merz, currently favourite in the polls with the CDU/CSU at 29%, already faced Scholz in a TV duel last Sunday. According to a Forschungsgruppe Wahlen poll, the outgoing chancellor won the confrontation by a narrow margin (37% vs. 34%), being more credible and sympathetic in the eyes of the viewers. However, the Spd remains in third place in voting intentions with 16%, behind AfD (20-21%) and the Greens (12-14%).

Scholz and Merz had already faced an unusual audience in January: children between 7 and 14 years old for a broadcast on Sat.1. On that occasion, Scholz kept a calm profile, while Merz joked about his school background. Tonight’s debate could offer new insights into the balance of the election campaign.
