Netanyahu gathers military leadership, pressure on negotiations
The truce in Gaza remains hanging by a thread as Hamas confirms its intention to release three Israeli hostages on Saturday 15 February in order to prevent the ceasefire agreement from collapsing. The group says it will honour its commitments, including prisoner exchanges and the provision of humanitarian aid to the population of the Strip.
Israel, however, rejects certain conditions set by Hamas, such as the entry of heavy vehicles into the Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called an emergency meeting with military and security leaders in Beersheba, while mediators from Egypt and Qatar try to unblock the situation.
Meanwhile, according to the Wall Street Journal, Israel is calling for an accelerated release of the hostages still alive, after the three men freed last week appeared in an extremely weakened condition. Tel Aviv would also like to expand the list of prisoners to be released in the first phase of the agreement, but it is unclear whether Hamas will agree.
On the international front, Yemeni Houthi rebels threaten to resume attacks against Israel and ships in the Red Sea in case of a forced displacement of the Gaza population.
