Israel may delay (or scuttle) the second phase of the Ceasefire
The way Israel is moving everything suggests that it wants to boycott the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire talks. Low-level delegation sent to Doha: a signal for postponement?
Israel seems intent on delaying or avoiding altogether the second phase of the ceasefire and the release of hostages. Tomorrow, it will send a low-profile delegation, consisting of Mossad and Shin Bet officials, to Doha to discuss only the implementation of the first phase of the agreement, Israeli media reported.
An Unconventional Delegation
Normally, Israeli delegations in talks with Hamas in Qatar are led by Mossad chief David Barnea. However, the decision to send only lower-ranking officials suggests, according to the daily Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, a possible willingness on the part of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to postpone the second phase of the agreement.
Netanyahu’s comments
During a recent speech in Washington, Netanyahu called for an extension of the first phase of the agreement, raising doubts about Israel’s willingness to comply with all the conditions of the ceasefire. Another Israeli official stated that Israel will not withdraw from the Philadelphia corridor unless Hamas agrees to no longer control Gaza.
