Trump proposes a plan for Gaza, Netanyahu supports it: Arab world totally against it

The idea of a ‘Gaza Riviera’ meets with the Israeli premier’s approval, while Iran, the Arab League, Hamas and Palestine denounce a plan to forcibly relocate Palestinians

The plan proposed by US President Donald Trump to turn Gaza into a sort of ‘Riviera of the Middle East’ continues to provoke strong international reactions. The initiative, which envisages the possibility for the Strip’s inhabitants to leave the territory and move elsewhere, has found a staunch supporter in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called the idea ‘excellent’ and worthy of being ‘evaluated, pursued and implemented’. In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu stated that the project could ‘create a different future for everyone’ and emphasised that nothing prohibits Palestinians from ‘leaving if they want to, and then coming back’. However, he reiterated the need to rebuild Gaza.

In support of this view, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the armed forces to prepare a plan to facilitate the departure of the Strip’s inhabitants. According to the statement, the plan will provide several options for the Palestinians to leave, either through land crossings or by sea or air, provided there are countries willing to accept them.

International reactions: criticism and accusations of violating international law

The proposal triggered a wave of condemnation in the Arab world. Iran openly denounced the plan, calling it a manoeuvre to ‘wipe out the Palestinian nation’. Tehran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, accused Trump and Israel of promoting a forced population transfer, violating the basic principles of international law and the UN Charter.

Clear opposition also came from the Arab League, which while recognising Washington’s desire to achieve lasting peace, called the initiative a ‘recipe for instability’ and an unacceptable attempt to displace Palestinians. The Cairo-based organisation reiterated that the solution to the conflict must come through the creation of a Palestinian state encompassing both the West Bank and Gaza.

Hamas condemned the plan in harsh words, accusing the Trump administration of ‘aligning itself with the extreme Israeli right’ and of wanting to eliminate the Palestinian cause through forced population displacement. Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas also categorically rejected the proposal, saying that the Palestinian leadership will not allow the ‘uprooting of its people from their homeland’. According to Abbas, peace and stability in the region will only be possible with the creation of an independent Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital.

Egypt and Turkey oppose forced relocation

Egypt has also expressed strong reservations about the project. The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, reiterated the need to rebuild Gaza quickly, without resorting to the evacuation of the population. During a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, Mohammed Mustafa, in Cairo, Abdelatty emphasised the importance of keeping Palestinians in the Strip and called for the Palestinian Authority to regain control of the territory.

From Turkey came a firm condemnation. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called the idea of a forced relocation ‘unacceptable’, stressing that neither Ankara nor the region can accept such a solution.
