After the fall of the regime, the Constitution was suspended and an interim president appointed

The new Syrian authorities announced the beginning of a new era after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The Constitution was suspended, the parliament and the army of the previous government were dissolved, as well as the Baath Party and all affiliated armed groups. Ahmed al-Sharaa, known by the nom de guerre al-Jolani, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, was appointed interim president.

Al-Jolani, originally affiliated with al-Qaeda, led HTS in the capture of Aleppo and the subsequent fall of the Assad regime. In recent years, he has sought to reposition himself as a political leader, distancing himself from his jihadist roots and presenting himself as a figure of stability for post-conflict Syria.

The new government has expressed its intention to dismantle the socialist economic policies of the Assad era, focusing on privatising state enterprises, attracting foreign investment and strengthening international trade. However, Syria faces significant challenges, including an economy devastated by years of conflict and international sanctions, with 90 per cent of the population living in poverty.
