Forest fire near Los Angeles: evacuations underway
Los Angeles County authorities on alert for a new dry wind-fuelled blaze
A vast forest fire, named ‘Hughes’, broke out today near Castaic Lake, about 60 kilometres north of Los Angeles, forcing authorities to issue evacuation orders. The flames, which started at 11 a.m. local time (8 p.m. in Italy), quickly consumed more than 20 square kilometres in less than three hours, sustained by strong Santa Ana winds and extremely dry conditions.
The fire is affecting the hills around the lake basin, a sparsely populated area. However, winds are pushing the fire southwards, a more densely populated area, now enveloped in a thick blanket of smoke.
This new fire is reminiscent of the devastation of the fires of 7 January, which claimed 27 lives and destroyed Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Again, wind and water shortages were key factors in the rapid spread of the flames.
