Two hospitals in the crosshairs of the Israeli army as the death toll and the suffering of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip grows

Israel has again struck hospital facilities in the Gaza Strip, claiming that they have been turned into Hamas command centres. After the Kamal Adwan hospital, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) attacked the al-Ahli hospital and the al-Wafaa hospital, resulting in the death of at least seven people and several wounded, according to the local Civil Defence. The Israeli government justified the attacks by stating that Hamas uses these facilities for military operations, but the raids further aggravated the suffering of the civilian population already hard hit by the conflict.

Critical humanitarian conditions: cold and lack of vital resources

The population of the Gaza Strip continues to pay a high price. The severe cold and the lack of vital resources such as electricity, water and food are claiming victims among the most vulnerable. An infant just 20 days old, Juma al-Batran, froze to death, marking the fifth infant death in a week. The baby’s father, Yahya al-Batran, expressed his grief in an interview with Al Jazeera: ‘My children are dying before my eyes and nobody cares. The difficult health situation is aggravated by imminent heavy rains that could further worsen living conditions for the two million inhabitants of the Strip, many of whom are without adequate shelter.

Israeli PM Netanyahu hospitalised: prostate operation

While the war continues, Israeli PM Benyamin Netanyahu also faces health issues. His office reported that the premier, suffering from a urinary tract infection, will undergo prostate surgery. Due to his condition, Netanyahu requested and obtained a suspension of the court hearings scheduled for this week in his corruption trial.

Shock testimony: Israeli hostage report

A new report by the Israeli Ministry of Health, based on the testimonies of hostages released in November 2023 and those rescued by the Israel Defence Forces, has revealed disturbing details. The document, intended for the UN, describes the terrible conditions of captivity the hostages were subjected to, which included physical and psychological abuse. Among the most shocking cases, two teenagers are reported to have been forced to perform sexual acts on each other under duress and to have been sexually abused by their captors.

New attacks in Syria and Lebanon: ongoing military escalation

The Israeli offensive does not stop in Gaza. In Syria, an explosion hit an arms depot near Damascus, killing eleven people. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights attributes the attack to an Israeli raid. In Lebanon, the Israeli army has warned the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (Unifil) that it can no longer guarantee their safety near Taybe, in the south of the country. Unifil, through its deputy director Kandice Ardiel, reiterated the importance of the peacekeepers’ freedom of movement in the area, in accordance with UN resolution 1701.
