The actor joins the universe created by George Lucas: the film will be directed by Shawn Levy and set five years after Episode IX

Ryan Gosling will star in the new Star Wars universe film. The Canadian actor will lead the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter, a film directed by Shawn Levy scheduled for release on 28 May 2027. The announcement came during the Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni.

The film, a standalone set approximately five years after the events narrated in The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX, 2019), will introduce new characters and an entirely new storyline, exploring an era never before depicted on the big screen. Production will begin in the autumn.
