The New York Times: the Italian premier among the few European leaders appreciated by the US president. No demands, only praise and agreement on conservative issues

Giorgia Meloni is ‘one of the few European leaders liked by Donald Trump’. This is underlined by the New York Times, which dedicates a long in-depth article to the meeting at the White House between the Italian premier and the American president.

The newspaper highlights how Trump and Vice-President J.D. Vance expressed the intention to propose Meloni’s conservative and nationalist positions as a model for the entire European continent. During the lunch in the Cabinet Room and the conversation in the Oval Office, Meloni is said to have appeared perfectly at ease, avoiding any potentially undesirable requests – as in the case of Ukrainian President Zelensky – and limiting herself to praise for Trump and reminders of her favourite topics.

Two political passages were highlighted: the declaration of wanting to ‘make the West great again’, an echo of the famous Trumpian slogan, and the clear distance from themes such as diversity and ‘woke’ ideology, absent from the two leaders’ shared visions.

The New York Times also underlines the diplomatic prudence with which Meloni, while representing Italy, acted as an interlocutor also for the European Union. She invited Trump to Rome, hoping for a meeting with the other EU leaders, while admitting that no commitment came from the White House. The hope in Brussels is that the Italian premier can become a bridge between the two sides of the Atlantic, even on sensitive issues such as the trade tariffs imposed by the United States.
