Strong statements from Moscow against French President Emmanuel Macron, accused of wanting to prolong the war in Ukraine and compared to historical figures such as Hitler and Napoleon

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has launched heavy accusations against French President Emmanuel Macron, comparing his statements to the nation to those of Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte. Lavrov pointed out that, unlike the two historic leaders, Macron is not acting diplomatically, but seems to be aiming to defeat Russia with equally hostile intentions. These statements were made during a press conference, reported by the Tass news agency.

Accusations against the use of nuclear weapons

Lavrov also accused Macron of considering Russia a threat to France and Europe and of preparing for the use of nuclear weapons against Moscow. ‘It is clear that he poses a threat to us,’ Lavrov said, further fuelling tensions between Paris and Moscow. The allegations include the French president’s involvement in meetings with European and British chiefs of staff, speculating scenarios of nuclear conflict.

Moscow rejects possibility of European peacekeeping troops in Ukraine

The Kremlin, through spokesman Dmitri Peskov, called Macron’s speech ‘very confrontational’, accusing France of seeking the continuation of war. At the same time, Lavrov rejected any agreement with the European Union to deploy peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, saying such a proposal has an ‘openly hostile’ objective towards Moscow.

Zakharova’s criticism: ‘Macron is disconnected from reality’

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, further criticised Macron, calling him ‘disconnected from reality’ and ‘a storyteller’. Zakharova also recalled statements by former French President François Hollande and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who allegedly admitted that they never intended to abide by the Minsk agreements. According to Zakharova, Macron should apologise to the French people for misleading them on these issues.
