The Trump administration, with the launch of an Fcc investigation, intensifies its campaign against diversity and inclusion initiatives, now taking aim at Disney and Abc News
The Trump administration opens a new chapter in its challenge against American media, with an investigation launched by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) into Disney’s diversity and inclusion practices. The FCC, through its chairman Brendan Carr, announced the launch of an investigation into whether the company, including its Abc News division, is complying with government regulations in promoting diversity.
Carr sent a letter to Disney, in which he asked for clarification of any discriminatory practices. ‘I want to ensure that Disney ends any discriminatory initiatives, not just in name but in substance,’ Carr said, noting that although the company has recently revised some of its inclusion programmes, significant concerns remain.
This investigation is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration against diversity, equity and inclusion (Dei) initiatives, which extends beyond US borders. Recently, French companies that have contracts with the US government received a communication from the US embassy in Paris urging them to comply with Trump’s new executive order banning Dei programmes when dealing with the US government.
Brendan Carr, who was appointed to head the Fcc by Trump last November, has already launched several investigations into other media outlets, including National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (Pbs), as well as the inclusion practices adopted by companies such as Verizon and Comcast/NbcUniversal.
In this context, Disney is now under scrutiny for how it manages the representation of diversity in its content, including characters. A Disney spokesperson said that the company is cooperating with the Fcc and was ready to provide all requested information.
