Zelensky in Munich: ‘Ukraine does not accept agreements without involvement, Trump talks to us first’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasises the importance of a bilateral meeting with Donald Trump before the one with Putin, reiterating the need for a common perspective on European security and Ukraine’s involvement in every decision affecting it
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in Munich that Ukraine has its own plan for the country’s future, but insisted on the need for a ‘common perspective’ to address the geopolitical situation. In talks with US President Donald Trump, Zelensky confirmed the importance of meeting bilaterally with him first, prior to any meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reiterating that any decision on Ukraine must go through the country’s direct involvement.
Zelensky stressed that ‘Ukraine will never accept agreements made behind our backs without our involvement’ and extended this principle to Europe as well: ‘No decision on Ukraine without Ukraine. No decision on Europe without Europe.’
Referring to the information received from ‘intelligence services’, the Ukrainian president sounded a new alarm about Russia’s possible move to send troops to Belarus, a pretext for military exercises, but with the risk of an attack on Ukraine or other neighbouring countries, given that Belarus borders three NATO member states.
In this context, Zelensky renewed his call for a common European defence and reiterated that Ukraine’s security is closely linked to its NATO membership.
