The Bella 1 tanker incident exposes evasion of US forces, sanctions violations, and risks to maritime security in the Atlantic

The crew of the Bella 1 triggered the Bella 1 tanker incident by painting a Russian flag on the ship’s hull, claiming protection from Moscow, according to US officials cited by the New York Times. The tanker was under US sanctions for transporting Iranian oil intended to fund terrorism.

On December 21, the US Coast Guard intercepted the Bella 1 in the Caribbean Sea while it was en route to Venezuela. The crew ignored the stop order, altering course northwest—possibly toward Greenland or Iceland—without cargo and with the transponder off since December 17. This defiance illustrates the scale of the Bella 1 tanker incident and highlights the challenges in controlling the so-called “shadow fleet” of sanctioned tankers.

This incident is part of a broader US operation targeting ships involved in the illicit transport of Iranian, Russian, and Venezuelan oil. The Treasury Department announced sanctions against ten individuals and companies from Venezuela and Iran, including the Empresa Aeronáutica Nacional, accused of supplying the armed forces of both nations.

John K. Hurley, Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the US Treasury, said: “We will continue to act swiftly to deny anyone supporting the Iranian military-industrial complex access to the US financial system.” The Bella 1 tanker incident underscores ongoing challenges in maritime security and sanctions enforcement.
