The US president has not yet made a final decision on attacks against military targets linked to drug trafficking in Venezuela
The United States is considering air strikes in Venezuela against military facilities suspected of being linked to drug trafficking. US officials, quoted by the Wall Street Journal, explained that any air intervention would be a clear message to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro: it is time to step down.
Although Trump has not yet made a final decision on a ground intervention, sources point out that air raids in Venezuela would focus on strategic hubs used by alleged traffickers, including ports and airports under army control. The president’s stated goal is to stop the flow of drugs to the United States, particularly fentanyl, which is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each year.
So far, the administration has deployed a massive military presence in the Caribbean, but air strikes would represent a significant escalation from previous operations, which were limited to vessels suspected of transporting drugs. According to experts cited by the Wall Street Journal, Venezuela is not directly involved in the production of fentanyl, but remains a transit route for cocaine from Colombia.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has deployed an aircraft carrier to the region, and B-52 and B-1 bombers have conducted reconnaissance missions along the Venezuelan coast. In an unusual move, Trump has also authorised the CIA to conduct covert operations on the territory.
The United Nations has called on the United States to suspend air raids in Venezuela against vessels suspected of drug trafficking and to ensure swift and transparent investigations, highlighting the risk of civilian casualties and extrajudicial killings.
