After a heated exchange with Medvedev, the US president deploys two units in response to threats
Donald Trump raises the stakes in the confrontation with Moscow. The US president announced today, 1 August, the deployment of two nuclear submarines in response to what he called “highly provocative statements” by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the Russian Federation Security Council.
‘I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just words,’ Trump wrote on social media. ‘Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this is not one of those cases,’ he added, suggesting that this is a clear message to the Kremlin leadership.
The Trump-Medvedev duel
The clash comes amid an already tense climate. In recent days, Trump had given Russia a 10-day ultimatum to end the war in Ukraine, threatening new sanctions if it failed to do so. A move that provoked a harsh reaction from Medvedev.
The latter responded via X, accusing Trump of “playing the ultimatum game” and warning him: “Russia is not Israel or Iran. Every new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not with Ukraine, but with your own country”.
In a sarcastic tone, Medvedev then urged Trump ‘not to follow the path of Sleepy Joe,’ a derogatory label aimed at former President Joe Biden. The tycoon’s response was immediate: ‘Medvedev should be careful with his words, he is entering very dangerous territory.’
Diplomatic escalation
The order to deploy the submarines marks a qualitative leap in the crisis. No details have been provided on the location of the units, but the decision is interpreted as a direct signal to Russia and Vladimir Putin at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow seem increasingly precarious.
According to US administration sources, the measure is intended to be “defensive and deterrent” and is part of a broader strategy of pressure to stop the aggression in Ukraine.
