Trump to Zelensky: ‘Can you strike Moscow and St. Petersburg?’

In the 4 July phone call between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the White House tenant allegedly encouraged Ukraine to strike strategic targets within Russian territory, going so far as to ask if Kiev was capable of attacking Moscow and St Petersburg with long-range missiles.
This was revealed by the Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the content of the conversation. According to the British newspaper, Trump said: ‘Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow? Can you also hit St Petersburg?’ Zelensky reportedly replied: ‘Of course, we can do that if you give us the weapons.’
A change of course from election promises
According to the Financial Times, the exchange represents a significant shift in Trump’s position, who during his election campaign promised a quick end to the war and a less interventionist approach to international conflicts.
The former president, now back in the White House, is said to be aiming to “make the Russians suffer” militarily in order to force them to the negotiating table.
Tomahawk hypothesis: evaluated but not yet approved
The Washington Post also confirms the aggressive line, revealing that in recent days Trump has been considering sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. These are the same missiles used last month in an attack on Iranian targets.
Sources close to the administration report that the issue was discussed until last Friday, but that Tomahawks are not currently included in the arms package destined for Kiev. However, their inclusion remains possible at a later stage, should Trump decide to increase military pressure on Moscow. No confirmation or denial has been forthcoming from the White House at this time.
