Trump talks to Putin: ‘There will be no immediate peace, but we will stay in touch.’

Over an hour-long phone call between the US president and the Kremlin leader. The discussion focused on Ukrainian attacks on Russian bases and the Iran dossier. First call also with Pope Leo XIV

A telephone conversation lasting over an hour between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. A discussion described as ‘good’ by the American leader himself, even if it did not lead – at least for now – to any concrete developments towards a truce in the conflict in Ukraine. The discussion focused on the recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian air bases and growing international tension, with a mention also of Iran and nuclear issues.

Trump: “Putin wants to respond to Kiev’s attacks”
‘He told me, very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attacks on Russian bases by Kiev,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social at the end of the conversation. The reference is to the drone attacks launched by Ukraine against Russian military airports, which Moscow considers part of an escalation desired by Kiev.

Trump clarified that he had not been informed in advance of these operations, denying rumours circulated by the Kremlin through diplomatic adviser Yuri Ushakov.

The Kremlin: ‘Constructive exchange, we will keep in touch’
According to Ushakov, both leaders described the phone call as “positive and quite productive”, confirming their willingness to stay in touch. The conversation also touched on “other attacks by both sides”, Trump explained, suggesting that it was not a one-sided conversation.

Iran and nuclear power: the looming threat
The Iran dossier was also discussed during the phone call between Trump and Putin. ‘Time is running out for Iran’s decision on nuclear weapons,’ warned the US president. ‘Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, and on this, I believe, we agree.’

According to Trump, Putin expressed his willingness to participate in any talks, offering himself as a mediator to accelerate a diplomatic solution. But the tycoon remains sceptical: ‘Iran is playing for time. A definitive answer is needed very quickly.’

Putin calls Pope Leo XIV: focus on humanitarian crisis
Also on Wednesday 4 June, Vladimir Putin had his first official phone call with Pope Leo XIV. This was announced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who spoke of a discussion focused on the Ukrainian conflict, which has been ongoing for over three years following the Russian invasion.

Putin reportedly thanked the Pontiff for his willingness to intervene in humanitarian issues with an approach “free from political interests” and reiterated that Russia “is doing everything possible to reunite deported children with their families”.
