The exhibition is hosted at the Palazzo della Cancelleria

The exhibition ‘Jordan: Dawn of Christianity’, organised by Jordan’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in cooperation with the Vatican, has opened in Rome. The exhibition, open until 28 February 2025 with free admission by appointment, celebrates 30 years of diplomatic relations between Jordan and the Holy See, coinciding with the Vatican’s Jubilee Year and the 60th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s visit to Jordan.

The event displays 90 archaeological artefacts from 34 Jordanian sites, some of which are being presented abroad for the first time. The exhibition traces the origins of Christianity through mosaics, inscriptions and artefacts, highlighting Jordan’s historical role in the spread of the Christian faith.

Among the iconic sites represented in the exhibition are five pilgrimage sites recognised by the Vatican:

Tel Mar Elias, the birthplace of the prophet Elijah;
Our Lady of the Mountain, dedicated to the Virgin Mary;
Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have had a vision of the Promised Land;
Macheronte, site of the martyrdom of John the Baptist;
Maghtas, the site of the Baptism of Jesus Christ on the River Jordan.

King Abdullah II emphasised the importance of the Christian community in Jordan, stating that ‘Christians have been an integral part of Middle Eastern society for thousands of years and vital to the future of the region’.
