After the plane crash in Washington, Donald Trump severely attacked Pete Buttigieg, the Biden administration’s transport minister, blaming him for the handling of air safety. Buttigieg’s retort was not long in coming: he called the president’s intervention ‘despicable’ and criticised him for fuelling political controversy while the families of the victims are grieving.

‘Buttigieg emphasised that safety has always been the priority of his mandate, highlighting the strengthening of air traffic controls and the fact that, under his administration, no accidents have occurred on millions of commercial flights.
