US president’s idea triggers criticism from Hamas and Islamic Jihad

Donald Trump has launched a controversial proposal to relocate Palestinian refugees from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan, describing the enclave as a ‘demolition site’. Speaking from Air Force One, the US president said the area should be ‘cleared’, adding that the relocation could be temporary or permanent. ‘Almost everything is demolished and people die there. I would rather work with some Arab nations and build housing in a different place where they can live in peace,’ Trump said, according to reports in the Washington Post.

The proposal comes at a delicate moment, during the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, which allowed the release of seven Israeli hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Despite this, Trump’s words have provoked strongly negative reactions.

Hamas, through the mouth of its political representative Bassem Naim, categorically rejected the idea, calling it a further attempt to displace the Palestinian people: ‘Just as we have foiled every plan of displacement and alternative homelands over the decades, we will also foil this project’.

Islamic Jihad also strongly criticised the proposal, calling it ‘deplorable’ and accusing Trump of promoting war crimes. The movement stated that forcing Palestinians to leave their land is a violation of international law and human rights.
