Cecilia Sala freed thanks also to Elon Musk’s intervention
According to the New York Times, the American billionaire played a role in the journalist’s release in Iran
According to the New York Times, Cecilia Sala, a journalist detained in Iran, was freed thanks to the intervention of Elon Musk. The journalist’s fiancé, Daniele Raineri, reportedly asked the American tycoon for help directly, following a meeting Musk had had with the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, a month before Sala’s arrest. Musk would then contact the ambassador again, using diplomatic channels, to try to facilitate the journalist’s release.
Musk’s role in international diplomacy
The New York Times points out that Musk, increasingly active on the international scene, has been in contact with Iranian diplomats, although his direct involvement in Sala’s cause remains unclear. His closeness to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who recently met Trump at Mar-a-Lago, may have played an indirect role in facilitating his interaction with the Iranian regime. However, Meloni herself has stated that she does not know whether Musk played a direct role in the release of Sala, claiming to have no knowledge of it.
Daniele Raineri’s involvement
Daniele Raineri, Cecilia Sala’s boyfriend, said he sought Musk’s help through an intermediary, Andrea Stroppa, an IT expert and acquaintance of the billionaire. Raineri said he thought of Musk after reading that there was a ‘channel’ between the billionaire and Iranian diplomats. The message Raineri sent to Stroppa on 29 December led to Musk’s awareness of Sala’s case, although it is unclear whether Musk’s intervention was instrumental in his release.
