The German daily highlights the Italian government’s success in reducing migration flows, thanks to agreements and targeted measures

According to the German newspaper Bild, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has shown Germany that a radical change in the management of migration flows is possible. Unlike the government led by Olaf Scholz, which met with criticism for its approach to the migration crisis, Meloni has reportedly been able to tackle the situation with determination, making the issue a priority from the very first moments of her mandate.

The newspaper points out that although Italy and Germany are only partially comparable in terms of borders – Italy with its long coastline and Germany with almost four thousand kilometres of land borders – the Italian government’s action shows that national governments are by no means powerless in the face of immigration. Meloni’s result would show that it is possible to have real control over how many people from other cultures arrive in the country.

The Bild attributes a large part of the Italian prime minister’s success to the agreement reached with Tunisia in the summer of 2023, an understanding signed together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The aim was clear: to stop human trafficking, which is often responsible for the dangerous crossings that put migrants’ lives at risk.

Furthermore, the German newspaper points out that a series of measures, including a strengthening of coastal surveillance, stricter rules for sea rescue operations by private NGOs and the creation of a reception centre in Albania, have contributed to making it increasingly difficult for traffickers to continue their cynical trade.

Meloni’s decisive approach, Bild concludes, stands in stark contrast to that of Olaf Scholz, who has been repeatedly accused in Brussels for his lack of commitment to migration management.
