The future US president threatens grave consequences for Hamas and the region if no agreement is reached on the release of hostages before the 20 January inauguration

Ahead of his inauguration into the White House on 20 January, Donald Trump issued an ultimatum regarding the release of hostages held by Hamas. During a press conference, he declared that if no agreement is reached before that date, ‘all hell will break loose in the Middle East’. Trump warned that the consequences would be very serious for Hamas and the entire region, adding that ‘there should never have been’ the 7 October attack.

At the same conference, Steve Witkoff, who will be Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, confirmed that negotiations for the release of the hostages are making ‘a lot of progress’. Witkoff then anticipated that after a new round of negotiations in Doha, it is hoped that positive developments can be announced by the time of President Trump’s inauguration.

Witkoff emphasised the importance of Trump’s leadership in the negotiation process and hoped that through his statements and reputation, the negotiations would lead to saving lives.
