Linda Lavin, the US actress famous for her role as Alice Hyatt in the hit sitcom ‘Alice’, died on 29 December in Los Angeles at the age of 87. The cause of death was a complication from recent lung cancer. Her portrayal of the widowed waitress and aspiring singer fighting for her son’s future had made her a television icon and earned her two Golden Globes and an Emmy nomination.

She made her Broadway debut in 1962 and received numerous awards, including a Tony Award, seven nominations and two Drama Desk Awards.
