An Azerbaijani Airlines flight crashes in Kazakhstan. On board between 67 and 105 passengers: 25 survivors, many in critical condition

An Azerbaijani Airlines plane crashed in Kazakhstan today, December 25. The Kazakh Ministry of Emergencies reported that 25 people reportedly survived the crash, but the overall passenger count remains uncertain. According to the Kazinform news agency, there were 105 people plus five crew members on board, while the Tengrinews news agency speaks of 67 passengers.

The flight and the dynamics of the crash

The plane, an Embraer 190, had departed from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and was headed to Grozny, Chechnya. During the flight, due to visibility problems, it was reportedly initially redirected to Makachkala, before attempting a landing in Aktau, Kazakhstan. The aircraft was reportedly severely damaged by impact with a flock of birds, making control impossible.

Nationality and condition of passengers

Kazakh authorities have begun to release the first details about the nationalities of the passengers. On board were 37 Azeris, 6 Kazakhs, 3 Kyrgyz and 16 Russians. According to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, the survivors include 12 people in critical condition. Kazinform news agency reported that 5 people are currently hospitalized in intensive care, including 2 children.

Dramatic landing and rescue efforts

Pilots flew over Aktau Airport attempting a landing, hampered by severe maneuverability problems. The attempt ended tragically when they hit the ground, causing the plane to explode, turning it into a fireball. Dramatic images of the crash were circulated on social media. Eleven fire brigade units responded to the scene of the tragedy, according to the Kazakh Ministry of Emergencies.
