Violent clashes after confirmation of Frelimo victory: the toll is 21 dead and 25 injured across Mozambique, Interior Minister announces

In Mozambique, the post-election climate of tension continues to worsen. Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda told a news conference that twenty-one people, including two police officers, have died in the last 24 hours as a result of clashes related to the presidential election results. Violence broke out after the Supreme Court confirmed the victory of the Frelimo party, which has been in power for more than 50 years.

Widespread acts of violence across the country

Minister Ronda also reported that 236 incidents of serious violence were recorded across the country, with a total toll of 25 injured, including 13 police officers. Demonstrations against the election result turned violent, with clashes between demonstrators and police forces touching several areas of Mozambique.

The confirmation of the Frelimo victory and the escalation of tension.

The clashes began immediately after the Supreme Court’s decision to confirm the victory of Frelimo, led by the outgoing president. The Oct. 9 election, already marked by allegations of irregularities and fraud, triggered the anger of opposition supporters, who have been protesting the result for weeks. Frelimo has been in power in Mozambique for more than half a century, and the outcome of the election has further exacerbated the discontent of a section of the population.
