The losses of North Korean troops allied with Russia are mounting as Pyongyang prepares new ‘cannon fodder’ to be sent to support Putin in Ukraine

More than a thousand North Korean soldiers lost their lives or were injured in the fighting against Ukrainian forces after being deployed in support of the Russian army. This is the estimate provided by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC), which is closely monitoring the conflict in Ukraine, now entering its third year since the start of the Russian invasion.

North Korean troop losses

According to the South Korean General Staff, North Korean troops recently deployed in Ukraine suffered around 1,100 casualties in terms of dead and wounded. The assessment is the result of an analysis of intelligence information gathered in recent months, while Pyongyang continues to provide support to Moscow in the war against Kiev.

Pyongyang prepares to send new troops and kamikaze drones

North Korea does not seem intent on stopping; on the contrary, according to South Korean intelligence reported by the Yonhap agency, it is planning to send more troops to Russia, along with new military equipment. Among them, Pyongyang is expected to supply kamikaze drones, technological devices increasingly used in the conflict to hit strategic targets. Currently, the North Korean regime has already sent 240 millimetre rocket launchers, indicated as one of the armaments used in the conflict.

The increase of North Korean forces in Russia

Information gathered by South Korean authorities suggests that North Korea is ready to strengthen its military presence in Russia by rotating or increasing the number of troops already deployed on the ground. This support is not limited to sending soldiers, but also includes the supply of weapons and equipment, crucial for the Russian army, which is facing a long war of attrition against Ukrainian forces.
