Colombian presidential candidate Uribe seriously wounded in an attack in Bogotá
Miguel Uribe Turbay, shot three times during a rally, is fighting for his life. A minor suspected of firing the shots has been arrested and has confessed to having been hired to carry out the attack
During a campaign event in the Colombian capital Bogotá, presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay was wounded by three gunshots, two of which hit him in the head. The attack took place while he was addressing a small crowd in a city park.
Police arrested a suspect, a minor aged around 15, at the scene. He was immediately taken to a clinic in western Bogotá and placed under strict surveillance. According to available information, the boy lives with his aunt and uncle following the death of his mother.
Uribe’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, appealed to the nation: “Miguel is fighting for his life. We ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him.”
The Democratic Center party, of which Uribe is a member, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a threat to “democracy and freedom in Colombia.”
The news remains sketchy, but the minor reportedly stated before undergoing surgery that he had been hired to carry out the attack, also revealing the identity of those who ordered it, but it is still unclear whether this is actually what happened.
