Qatargate: request for waiver of immunity of MEPs Alessandra Moretti and Elisabetta Gualmini
The Belgian federal prosecutor’s office has requested the waiver of immunity for the two Italian Democratic Party MEPs involved in the investigation into alleged Qatar-related bribes. The decision will be made official by Roberta Metsola
The Belgian federal public prosecutor’s office confirmed today, Tuesday 4 March, to the newspaper Le Soir that it had submitted a formal request to waive the parliamentary immunity of Alessandra Moretti and Elisabetta Gualmini. The two Italian MEPs, both elected with the Democratic Party in the North East constituency, are allegedly involved in the Qatargate investigation, a scandal that has seen suspicions of corruption linked to Qatar emerge.
The official announcement of the request will be made by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on Monday at the opening of the new plenary session. The waiver of immunity is a crucial step to allow the investigation, which could involve other European politicians and personalities, to progress.
