The British writer and screenwriter responds to allegations of sexual misconduct, claiming that all his relationships were consensual

Noted British author Neil Gaiman, author of bestsellers such as American Gods and Stardust, has strongly denied sexual misconduct allegations made against him by eight women in a recent New York Magazine article. According to the accusers, Gaiman had engaged in sexual acts without their consent, a claim the writer categorically rejected. ‘I have never had non-consensual sex with anyone. Never,’ he resolutely stated on his website, where he added that he had not spoken out before out of respect for the people involved and to avoid fuelling misinformation.

While acknowledging that there are moments he does not remember or interprets differently, Gaiman reiterated that all his sexual relationships have always been consensual, based on the communications he had with women at the time. He also stated that he reflected on how he had behaved in the past, admitting that he had not always been emotionally available and had acted selfishly. However, he emphasised that he does not accept being accused of sexual assault.

The allegations in detail

In July 2023, the podcast Tortoise Media had reported the allegations of two women accusing Gaiman of sexual assault. One of them claimed that the writer had performed sexual acts on her without her consent when he worked as a baby sitter for her family in New Zealand. Gaiman had vehemently denied the accusation, stating that all his relationships were consensual.

Shortly afterwards, another woman accused Gaiman of making sexual advances to her in exchange for a job opportunity at his New York property, making her sign a non-disclosure agreement in return for a $275,000 payment. This allegation was also rejected by the writer.

Allegations of sexual coercion and Gaiman’s responses

New York Magazine reported that other women claimed to have had consensual sex with Gaiman, but to have been involved in violent sexual practices, such as BDSM, that they had not fully accepted. According to the testimonies, some women, particularly those who had worked for him, felt coerced into sexual relationships because they depended on his work support and lived in his house. Despite allegations of coercion, Gaiman continued to maintain that all relationships were consensual, adding that while BDSM may not be for everyone, it is a lawful practice between consenting adults.

In January 2023, a complaint of sexual assault was filed with the New Zealand police, but the investigation was dropped without any concrete evidence emerging.

The debate on sexual practices and consent

The allegations against Neil Gaiman raise an important discussion about sexual consent, BDSM practices and the boundary between consensual relationships and those that can be perceived as coercive. Although Gaiman continues to defend himself, claiming that every relationship was consensual, the story raises questions about the power dynamic and the context in which some women felt compelled to perform sexual acts against their will. The investigation and controversy continue to make headlines, fuelling a debate involving the ethics of relationships and the difficulties in dealing with allegations of sexual violence, especially when consent is at the centre of the discussion.
