Israel, Hamas and the future of the Gaza Strip: new negotiations and hostage releases
Three Israeli hostages are to be released on Thursday as the ceasefire continues. Meanwhile, the future government of Gaza and the extension of the truce are being discussed
The Israeli government announced that three hostages would be released on Thursday: Arbel Yehoud, Agam Berger and another individual whose name was not released. Israel received a list from Hamas with information on the conditions of the detained prisoners, confirming that most of the 26 hostages scheduled for this first phase of the release are still alive. However, specific names were not disclosed.
Palestinians return to northern Gaza
The Ministry of Interior in Gaza confirmed the return of displaced people to Gaza City and the northern areas of the Strip. The crossing is along the Al-Rashid road, west of the Netzarim checkpoint. This is a first sign of recovery after weeks of intense shelling and displacement.
Hamas: doubts over future leadership of Gaza
A senior Hamas official, Moussa Abu Marzouk, said the group does not necessarily aim to rule Gaza once the conflict with Israel is over. In an interview with al Arabiya, Abu Marzouk stressed that the future administration of the Strip will require regional and international support, including that of Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Hamas says it is open to dialogue with all parties, except Israel, to negotiate a solution on the future government of the Strip. However, Abu Marzouk criticised former US President Donald Trump’s proposals, which assumed the displacement of Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan. ‘No Palestinian will accept this plan,’ he said.
Ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon extended
The White House confirmed the extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon until 18 February. Although Israel had initially planned to withdraw its troops from Lebanon by Sunday, the Israeli army announced that its forces will temporarily remain in the area due to the Lebanese army’s alleged lack of preparedness to take control.
