The justice in Tarija orders arrest after two failed summonses and orders the seizure of the former head of state’s assets

Bolivian justice has issued an arrest warrant for Evo Morales, the country’s former president. The decision was made by the Preliminary Hearing Judge of the Tarija court, following Morales’ refusal to appear before the magistrate to answer charges of child sexual assault and human trafficking.

The former head of state, who had already deserted a previous summons, failed to appear for the second time, prompting the court to issue the order. In addition to the arrest warrant, the judge ordered the seizure of all Morales’ assets, thus intensifying the legal pressure against him.

The charges against Morales, the historic leader of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) and president of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019, have attracted a great deal of attention both nationally and internationally. However, the former president has repeatedly rejected the accusations, calling them part of a political persecution campaign orchestrated by his opponents.

The affair marks yet another chapter in the tumultuous political career of Morales, who after resigning in 2019 following disputes over the election results, experienced a period of exile before returning to Bolivia in 2020, maintaining a central role in the MAS.

It remains to be seen whether the former president will voluntarily appear before justice or whether further measures will be taken to ensure his arrest.
