Body language, gestures and posture reveal the US president’s Donald Trump control and leadership skills, according to experts analysing his UN speech

“Donald Trump has a deep understanding of non-verbal language and knows exactly how it works on his audience.” Speaking to Adnkronos Salute, Maria Beatrice Alonzi, a writer and expert in non-verbal communication, commented on the gestures and posture used by the US president during his speech at the United Nations.

Alonzi noted that Trump “is highly aware of the impact of non-verbal communication on cameras, the press, and his audience. His gestures, particularly with his hands, are always directed outward, emphasised, and powerful. His torso and hips are forward, while his shoulders are pulled back,” creating a posture of presence and authority. Over time, she explained, every physical detail appears carefully calculated. “For example, when he greeted Putin, the handshake was deliberately prolonged, conveying both welcome and control. His approach is consistently directed outward, towards the press and his podium, to demonstrate presence and leadership, regardless of emotion.”

Another key element, Alonzi added, is Trump’s restraint and control: “He moderates, contains, and waits to manage his emotions. There is no visible explosiveness, contrary to popular belief. In his words, gestures, paraverbal cues, and body language, he always maintains control.”

She further observed that “when we see strong gestures, which might be interpreted as anger or dominance, they are always intentional. He deliberately raises his voice slightly or uses a fist gesture. One recurrent behaviour involves gestures of constraint or closure, with both his hands and mouth—signals of leadership. Conversely, when he faces someone he considers his equal or someone from whom he wants to gain something, his posture changes: shoulders drop, head tilts, body closes.”

In sum, Alonzi highlights Donald Trump’s meticulous use of body language as a consistent tool to convey power, control, and leadership to his audience.
