U.S. president uses Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to expedite deportation of crime-related foreign nationals. Controversial move thwarted by federal order

U.S. President Donald Trump has invoked rarely used war powers to order the repatriation of foreign nationals suspected of being members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. According to a report by “Politico,” Trump’s decision is based on the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, an ancient but still applicable law that allows the federal government to swiftly remove foreigners deemed dangerous in times of war or invasion situations.

Trump’s proclamation, signed Friday but made public by the White House Saturday afternoon, aims to handle the immediate deportation of individuals linked to organized crime, as in the case of the dreaded Venezuelan gang. This move came just hours after a preventive order issued by a federal judge temporarily blocked the immediate repatriation of five Venezuelan nationals, part of a larger group believed to be linked to the Tren de Aragua.

The measure has already sparked discussions about possible legal and humanitarian implications, while supporters of the Trump administration see it as a necessary measure to ensure national security. However, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold, especially considering the constraints placed by the federal courts.
