Donald Trump downsizes General Kellogg, will be special envoy only for Ukraine

The general, previously tasked with dealing with both Russia and Ukraine, will now focus only on the Ukrainian conflict, after a downsizing sought by Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that General Keith Kellogg has been appointed special envoy for Ukraine, an appointment that marks a significant change from his previous role. Until now, Kellogg had been responsible for both Russia and Ukraine, but this new appointment represents a downsizing of his role.

Trump has stated that General Kellogg, a highly respected military expert, will deal directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leadership in Kiev. However, this decision marks a turning point in geopolitical dynamics since, according to some sources, General Kellogg had previously been considered too supportive of the Ukrainian cause by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This led Trump to reduce Kellogg’s role, which will now focus exclusively on issues related to Ukraine.

In the past, General Kellogg had served as special envoy to both countries, but his more assertive view toward Russia and his more favorable stance toward Ukraine had put him at odds with Moscow. As a result, this move may also turn out to be an attempt by Trump to restore a more accommodating line toward Putin, considering the criticism of the role Kellogg had played until now.
