With 51 votes in favour and 49 against, the US Senate confirmed the nomination of Kash Patel as the new FBI director. Despite the opposition of two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who joined the Democrats in voting against his nomination, Patel takes over the post left vacant by Chris Wray, who resigned in January.
Patel, 44, is known for his loyalty to Donald Trump and his determination to target so-called “government gangsters”. Appointed by Trump to carry out a sweeping purge within the FBI and the Justice Department, Patel said he wanted to dismantle ‘deep state’ influences and target his political enemies. Patel’s political rise was swift, propelled by the confidence of Trump, who had already placed him in key roles during his first term, including positions in the Pentagon and the National Security Council.
His vision is outlined in the book ‘Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth, and the Battle for Our Democracy’, in which he calls for a purge within the government. The text includes a list of officials to be removed, and some of them have already taken legal precautions. During his recent interview on Stephen Bannon’s “War Room” podcast, Patel also stated that journalists could be prosecuted civilly or criminally.
In addition to politics, Patel has had a TV show on Epoch Times, a far-right website known for its conspiracy theories, and serves as a director on the board of Trump Media Technology Group, the company that controls Truth Social.
Patel’s confirmation marks a significant change for the FBI, with leadership heavily influenced by Trump’s political agenda and his battles against the federal system.
