Scepticism over the abilities of Trump’s chosen negotiator amid international criticism and irony

Keith Kellogg, appointed special envoy for Ukraine by Donald Trump, has the seemingly impossible task of resolving the crisis in a hundred days. However, his role is already the subject of criticism and sarcasm: described as a ‘Cold War relic’ in Moscow and as a man with no real political influence in the United States.

According to sources close to the Trump administration, Kellogg was chosen more for his loyalty than for specific expertise. ‘He does not offer opinions unless asked,’ noted former national security adviser John Bolton, emphasising that his job will simply be to carry out Trump’s directives, without any decision-making autonomy.

Kellogg’s proposed peace plan, published by the America First Policy Institute, includes controversial measures such as freezing Ukraine’s entry into NATO, stabilising the front line, and a gradual lifting of sanctions on Moscow in exchange for a peace agreement. This approach was ridiculed by the Russian press, which called it a combination of ‘gingerbread and lashings’.

Kellogg’s appointment seems to confirm that Trump intends to personally manage the negotiations with Vladimir Putin, excluding Kiev from a direct dialogue and foreseeing a long time for a possible resolution of the conflict. Meanwhile, a planned exploratory mission by Kellogg to Ukraine and Europe has been cancelled without further explanation.

A Vietnam War veteran and loyal Trump supporter since 2015, Kellogg has no diplomatic experience or in-depth knowledge of the Ukrainian crisis. Bolton, among others, strongly doubts his ability to be a counterweight to Putin’s influence on Trump.

The only significant link to Ukraine seems to be Kellogg’s daughter Meaghan Mobbs, president of an NGO that coordinates humanitarian aid for the country. However, this same organisation has been accused in the Russian press of questionable activities, such as the repatriation of American volunteer bodies.
