Jeff Baena, confirmation on US filmmaker’s death: he committed suicide by hanging

The indie director of ‘Life After Beth’ and ‘The Little Hours’ found lifeless in his Los Angeles home. Reasons for the gesture unknown

The film world is shaken by the tragic news of the death of Jeff Baena, a 47-year-old US director and screenwriter, who was found lifeless in his Los Angeles home last Friday, 3 January. Baena’s body was found hanged, in an apparent suicide, by his assistant who immediately alerted the authorities. The details were confirmed by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. The investigation was led by coroner Brice Hunt, with the support of police officer Philip Kim, who carried out the investigation.

Married since 2021 to actress Aubrey Plaza, known for her participation in the series ‘The White Lotus’, Baena had not publicly shown any signs of distress that could have foreshadowed the tragic gesture. The reasons that led him to take his own life are not known at the moment.

Born on 29 June 1977 in Miami, Baena had moved to Los Angeles after graduating from the New York University Film School. He began his career as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis and then worked as an editing assistant with David O. Russell. His career took a decisive turn with the co-writing of the film ‘I Heart Huckabees’ (2004) with Russell. His directorial debut came in 2014 with ‘Life After Beth – Love at Any Cost’, a film that starred his future wife, Aubrey Plaza, and was screened at the Sundance Film Festival.

His most successful works also include ‘A Weekend on the Edge’ (2016) and ‘The Little Hours’ (2017), which consolidated his reputation in the world of independent cinema. With films such as ‘Horse Girl’ (2020) and the romantic comedy ‘Spin Me Round’ (2022), Baena continued to explore singular stories and complex characters. In television, he created and produced ‘Cinema Toast’ (2021), an experimental anthology series.
