Caracas warns it will exercise its “legitimate right to defend itself” after US forces deploy to the Caribbean

Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro has claimed that the United States is planning a military “aggression” against his country, pledging that Venezuela will exercise its “legitimate right to defend itself” under international law. Speaking at a press conference, Maduro said relations with Washington were now “broken” following the deployment of US military forces in the Caribbean by President Donald Trump’s administration, officially to combat drug cartels.

Accusations and rhetoric
“There is an ongoing aggression of a military nature and Venezuela is entitled by international law to respond,” Maduro declared, branding US senator Marco Rubio a “lord of death and war”.

Background to the dispute
Tensions escalated last week when Trump announced that US forces had attacked a “drug-carrying vessel”, killing 11 “narco-terrorists” allegedly linked to the Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan cartel active across several countries and designated a “terrorist organisation” by Washington.

US allegations
The United States accuses Maduro of running a vast drug-trafficking network and has recently raised the reward for his capture to 50 million dollars, further straining relations between the two nations.
