Israel prepares offensive on Gaza City: media reports it will begin in mid-September
According to Channel 12, the attack will begin two weeks after reservists are called up. Netanyahu is pushing to bring it forward, while the army is focusing on protecting hostages and international legitimacy
A new offensive on Gaza City is expected to begin in mid-September, about two weeks after the reservists called up on 2 September enter service. This is according to Channel 12, which reports that an appeal will be made on Sunday to about one million Palestinians to leave the city.
Disagreements between the government and the army
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and political leaders are pushing for a rapid start to the operation. Military leaders, on the other hand, want to proceed with caution: first evacuate the civilian population, secure the hostages and troops, and strengthen the international legitimacy of the intervention.
The hostage issue
According to the Israeli broadcaster, the release of the hostages held in Gaza remains a priority, given their critical condition. Government sources cited explain that there are no substantial differences with Hamas on a possible ceasefire agreement and the release of prisoners. However, everything would depend on Netanyahu’s final decisions. ‘There are no magic solutions,’ they said, ‘but if we want to bring them back, we can do it now.’
