The 26-year-old man charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson faces serious federal and state charges. Also in the courtroom is support from a section of the public opposed to the American healthcare system

Luigi Mangione, 26, has dismissed all federal charges related to the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a major US healthcare group. On Friday, during a hearing in federal court in Manhattan, the young man – dressed in a beige prison jumpsuit and handcuffed – pleaded not guilty to the four charges against him: murder, two counts of stalking, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The Justice Department wants the death penalty

The most serious charge concerns murder with a firearm, for which the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for the Southern District of New York has already confirmed its intention to seek the death penalty. The announcement came on Thursday, a few weeks after Attorney General Pam Bondi formally authorised the request.

Mangione was indicted by a federal grand jury for the crime that took place on 4 December, when Thompson was shot dead while on his way to an investor conference organised by UnitedHealthcare in New York. An execution that immediately raised suspicions of premeditation.

A case that ignited public debate

The act generated a wave of reaction in the United States, where numerous people expressed their sympathy for Mangione, exasperated by the private healthcare system. During an earlier hearing in February on charges filed by the State of New York, dozens of supporters gathered outside the courthouse wearing green, the colour of the Nintendo ‘Luigi’ character, in solidarity. Some held signs with slogans such as ‘Free Luigi’ and ‘Healthcare is a human right’.

In addition to the federal charges, Mangione is also facing charges at the state level. In New York, he has already dismissed murder and terrorism charges. In Pennsylvania, however, he will have to answer for possession of a 3D-printed gun and false identity documents. These materials were allegedly found with him when he was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, after a week-long escape. He has not yet made an official statement on these charges, as he was first extradited to New York.

Defence claims: ‘Illegally detained’

The defence filed several motions in Pennsylvania asking for the charges to be dismissed and for certain evidence to be inadmissible. The lawyers claim that Mangione was stopped and searched without a legal basis and ask that his writings – found during the arrest – not be defined as a ‘manifesto’, to avoid distorting the perception of the trial.

The case remains in the spotlight due to its judicial complexity, political implications and media impact, while the young man awaits the next developments in prison.
