After positive meeting in Oman, US and Tehran prepare for second face-to-face in Italian capital

Talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran’s nuclear programme will continue in Rome on Saturday. This was reported by the Axios website, according to which the first round held last Saturday in Muscat, Oman, had a positive outcome, to the point of transforming the format of the negotiations from indirect to direct. The news was also confirmed by the Italian government, which accepted the formal request to host the second meeting in the capital.

According to sources quoted by Axios, the Trump administration was satisfied with the initial outcome of the talks and considers the shift to direct dialogue as an important advance in the negotiations, which have been reopened in an attempt to revive an understanding on the nuclear issue after years of tension.

Busy diplomatic week: Araghchi expected in Moscow

Meanwhile, Tehran is also preparing to engage Moscow in the diplomatic process. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to a Foreign Ministry spokesman, will travel to Russia in the coming days to report to his Russian counterparts on the progress of talks with the US delegation in Muscat. A strategic step to maintain coordination with the historic allies at a time of open negotiations with Washington.

Rome is thus preparing to become the new centre of a delicate confrontation, which could mark a turning point in the complex game on the Iranian nuclear issue.
