A Bloomberg News report speculates that China is considering selling TikTok’s US operations to Elon Musk to avoid a US ban
The Chinese government is reportedly considering selling TikTok’s US operations to Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), in response to pressure from the US government. The news was reported by Bloomberg News, albeit based on anonymous sources and without official comment from those involved.
This possibility is one of the options Beijing is reportedly exploring in view of a possible confirmation of the US Supreme Court ruling requiring ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, to divest from its US operations by 19 January. Otherwise, third-party internet service providers could be sanctioned for continuing to support TikTok in the US.
Anticipation for the Supreme Court decision is high, as it could affect the future of the platform in the US. TikTok has challenged the law, arguing that it restricts the freedom of expression rights of US users. The US government, on the other hand, claims that Chinese ownership poses a national security risk.
