Electricity grid sabotage in Nice, blackout for 45,000 people
Arson attack on a substation in the Moulins district. Security strengthened at strategic sites
New episode of sabotage to the electricity network on the French Riviera. An arson fire struck a substation in the Moulins district of Nice during the night, leaving around 45,000 people without electricity. The fire damaged a transformer, causing a partial blackout in the area. Power was restored at dawn, according to reports from the electricity company Enedis and local authorities.
The incident comes just hours after another blackout hit the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, causing traffic lights and ATMs to be blocked for over five hours and forcing organisers to use emergency generators. Investigations speak of coordinated acts of sabotage, including arson and vandalism to a high voltage pylon.
The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, called what had happened “criminal acts against the country” and announced a reinforcement of video surveillance at key points of the city’s electricity grid.
