Trump extends TikTok sale deadline by 75 days
US president signs executive order to avoid blocking app, but warns: knots remain with China
Donald Trump has decided to give another 75 days to conclude the agreement on the sale of TikTok, initially scheduled for Saturday 5 April. The US president announced this in a message on Truth Social, stressing the “great progress” in the negotiations, but also the need for further steps to obtain all the required approvals.
‘We do not want to overshadow TikTok,’ Trump wrote, confirming his intention to continue talks with the Chinese company ByteDance and Beijing. ‘We hope to work in good faith with China,’ he added, while acknowledging that the Chinese government would not be in favour of US-imposed tariffs: ‘But these tariffs are essential to fair trade and our national security.’
ByteDance, for its part, confirmed that there were “key issues to be resolved” before reaching a final agreement. The extension signed by Trump avoids, at least for now, the blocking of the popular platform on US soil.
