Security forces break up a sit-in at the heart of the capital’s commercial district as pressure mounts on the government
The latest protests in Iran have spread to one of Tehran’s most symbolic locations, the Grand Bazaar, where demonstrators gathered for a sit-in before being dispersed by security forces using tear gas. Much of the historic market remained closed following the intervention.
The Grand Bazaar has long played a central role in Iran’s economic and political life, and its involvement is widely seen as a sign that the unrest is likely to continue. The demonstrations come as Iran’s national currency, the rial, has fallen to a record low, worsening living conditions for ordinary citizens.
According to Iranian activists abroad, at least 35 people have been killed since the protests began, while more than 1,200 individuals have been arrested. Tensions are expected to rise further after the Central Bank sharply reduced access to preferential exchange rates for U.S. dollars used by importers and domestic producers.
The decision is likely to push prices higher in the coming days, with businesses passing increased costs directly on to consumers. Many Iranians have already seen their savings eroded by years of international sanctions and economic mismanagement.
President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered a government review into incidents linked to the protests but has acknowledged that the situation risks spiraling beyond the state’s control. In a televised address, he warned that the government cannot manage the crisis on its own and called for broader cooperation to prevent further instability.
