Afd leader Alice Weidel was elected chancellor candidate during the party congress in Riesa. The anti-Afd demonstration delayed the start of the proceedings

During the Afd federal congress in the eastern German city of Riesa, Alice Weidel was officially chosen as candidate for chancellor in the elections on 23 February. The decision was accepted by acclamation by the 600 delegates present. The congress, however, was marked by an anti-Afd demonstration that gathered some 8,000 people outside the congress centre, forcing the start of the proceedings to be postponed by two hours. Protesters chanted slogans such as ‘No to Nazis’, opposing the far-right party.

The delegates are now busy discussing the election programme of the Afd, which, according to polls, is credited with around 20 per cent of the support. Among the main topics are an exit from the euro, a stricter migration policy and a return to nuclear energy.

Meanwhile, Olaf Scholz has been reconfirmed as the Spd’s candidate for chancellor, although the party has recently faced an internal debate, with some members proposing the current Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, for the party leadership.
