Palisades fire: immediate evacuation order in Los Angeles, medical emergency declared
Los Angeles authorities have issued an evacuation order for areas affected by the Palisades fire. The city is also under a state of medical emergency due to the fires and strong winds
The Los Angeles Fire Department ordered the immediate evacuation of the areas affected by the Palisades fire, following an earlier warning. Authorities also declared a public health emergency for the whole of Los Angeles County, due to the devastating fires that have already claimed 11 lives and destroyed thousands of acres of land and homes.
The emergency has been aggravated by strong winds, which have further deteriorated air quality, releasing harmful particulate matter. Health authorities are advising citizens to avoid going outside in areas with high concentrations of smoke and ash and to wear N95 or P100 masks.
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has warned students to prepare for a possible evacuation, while pointing out that no orders have been issued for the campus at the moment.
Meanwhile, a petition on Change.org has gathered over 57,000 signatures demanding the resignation of Mayor Karen Bass. The petition accuses Bass of mismanagement during the fire crisis, calling for an investigation into the preparation and management of relief funds.
