Israel, protests against the war and new raids on Gaza
Thousands take to the streets to demand an end to the conflict and the release of hostages. Netanyahu accuses protesters of supporting Hamas
The demonstrations. Today, Sunday 17 August, is a day of protests in Israel, with demonstrators calling for an immediate end to the war, an agreement for the release of hostages and a halt to the new offensive in Gaza. Activists blocked roads across the country, from the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway to Begin Boulevard in the capital, as well as several arteries in the north and center. Israeli flags and yellow banners, symbolizing support for the hostages, were carried in the march. Police arrested at least 38 people, including 19 in Tel Aviv alone, warning of “severe measures” against those who jeopardize public order.
The hostages. The Families Forum has called a national strike and tomorrow will set up a protest camp on the border with Gaza, renamed “Checkpoint 50,” where relatives will remain indefinitely. “We will bring the country to a standstill,” said Einav Zangauker, mother of Matan, who is still being held captive by Hamas. The main trade union, Histadrut, did not join the appeal. In the square in Tel Aviv renamed “Hostage Square,” empty strollers symbolized the children killed in the attacks on October 7, 2023.
Netanyahu’s response. The Israeli prime minister condemned the protesters, arguing that calling for an end to the conflict without defeating Hamas “strengthens the group’s position, slows down the release of hostages, and makes a new October 7 possible.”
Raids on Gaza. At dawn, an Israeli bombardment hit the courtyard of the Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, killing at least seven civilians, according to the Wafa news agency. The attack precedes the start of operations to forcibly transfer Palestinians from the southern areas of the Strip to refugee camps on the central coast, the first phase of the new offensive announced by Netanyahu.
The death toll. The Gaza Ministry of Health has released an update: 61,897 dead and 155,660 wounded since the beginning of the conflict. Among the victims are 251 people who died of starvation, including 108 children. One child died today of malnutrition in hospitals in the Strip.
The Yemeni front. Israel struck an energy facility south of Sanaa today, used by the Houthis, following recent missile and drone launches against Israeli territory. The IDF spoke of a ‘terrorist regime infrastructure’, while the rebels denounced an ‘aggression’. This is the second raid in Yemen after the one on the port of Hodeida on June 21.
