Counting almost complete: Senator Rodrigo Paz in the lead, supported by Doria Medina

The presidential elections in Bolivia mark the end of twenty years of left-wing governments. The official partial results of the first round, with 92% of the votes counted, point to a runoff between center-right Senator Rodrigo Paz and former right-wing President Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga.

Paz is surprisingly in the lead with 32.15% of the vote, ahead of Quiroga, who has 26.87%. The second round will be influenced by the support of millionaire businessman Samuel Doria Medina, who came third with 19.86% and has already announced his support for Paz.

The alliance between Paz and Doria Medina could prove decisive in the final showdown, which will determine the name of Bolivia’s next president and the definitive handover after two decades of progressive leadership.
